A Day at the Olathe Fishing Derby

Inspiring the Next Generation of Anglers

At Fishing Tackle Forum, we have a deep-rooted passion for all things related to freshwater fishing. From testing and reviewing the latest gear to connecting with fellow fishing enthusiasts online, we take pride in every aspect of the sport. But one of our most cherished endeavors is advocating for youth and inclusivity in fishing. This commitment was in full display when I had the pleasure of volunteering at the annual Olathe Fishing Derby.

The event was nothing short of magical. Under a partly cloudy sky, with the sun shining bright and a gentle breeze in the air, Cedar Lake Park was bustling with excitement. Families from all over gathered to partake in this delightful event hosted by Olathe City Parks and Recreation.

I had the honor of measuring fish for the participants, guiding parents on the nuances of taking fish off hooks, and sharing tips and tricks for new anglers. A particular highlight? Measuring the winning catfish for the older youth division, which measured an impressive 19 inches!

However, the day was not just about fishing. The Olathe Fire Department showcased their remarkable bass boat, allowing kids and parents to get up close and engage with local first responders. Additional activities, ranging from tie-dying to engaging conservation programs, provided a holistic outdoor experience for families.

As I walked around the event, camera in hand, capturing moments of pure joy and excitement, I realized the profound impact such events have. For some, it was their first encounter with the thrill of a catch. For others, it was a cherished family tradition. But for all, it was a day of connection - with nature, with family, and with the broader community.

At Fishing Tackle Forum, our ethos aligns perfectly with events like these. Founded in 2004 by William Rock, and business partner Brian Wright, we've cultivated a digital community centered around freshwater

The Olathe Fishing Derby served as a reminder of why we fish. It's not just about the catch; it's about the stories we create, the bonds we strengthen, and the future we inspire. As I look forward to next year's event, I invite all members of our Fishing Tackle Forum family to join in, either as participants or volunteers. After all, the future of fishing rests in the hands of the next generation.
