Spring can be one of the best times to catch catfish. During the winter months catfish are very inactive but in the spring when the water starts to warm up so does the cat fishing. As the water temps start to rise into the 60 degree range catfish start feeding heavy they want to pack up some energy before the spawn season we refer to this time as the pre spawn season. Don't judge this from a certain date or month judge it by the water temp. Catfish start to move upstream in rivers this time of year they will move up until they get to a area that they cant cross this in many cases is a dam. Catfish will often stay in this area until the water hits the 70 degree range then they start to back down in search of spawning areas. The weather this time of year can make a big difference in how the fish will feed. Many people think rain will get the fish biting this is true sometimes but not this time of year. In the spring the water is just warming up and the rain is cold so it will often kill the bite now in the summer when the water is hot it will often increase the bite. In the spring look for stable weather several days that are nice no big rains or changes in the weather. A word of caution if heading out on the water tell someone where you will be take a radio along and a cell phone. The weather can change very fast this time of year so you should be ready for anything. We have enjoyed many great days and nights fishing in the spring but have also been caught up in some mighty nasty storms. If you know a storm is coming in get off the water it isn't worth the risk you will find many of the spring storms will pass very fast and you can go back to fishing. Remember the spring is your best shot at a trophy cat as they are very active and moving more this is one time of the year where location isn't a major factor. I hope that everyone gets out this spring and enjoys this great opportunity to catch some nice cats. Section Sponsor:
