How To Fish with Trout Worms
Fishing For Trout:
Depending on the weather and the temperture of the water, you can normally find that trout love natural baits such as worms, nimps and other natural baits around the water. Stocked fish are much more different than say a natural trout in a stream. Most of the time when you fish at some of your local lakes you will notice that they get shippments of fish from fish hatcheries local to the lake. These types of trout normally go for baits like we are used to such as a garden worm or a mealy worm. Another alternitive to real live baits is learning how to fish with plastic worms.
Setup for Plastic Worms:
Recommended fishing rod is something with a light action tip at least 6 - 7 foot to allow the tip to easily create an small movement making the worm stimulate movement with the end of a tail. When fishing a plastic worm for trout it is recommended to use small Owner freshwater fishing hooks Mosquito Pro Pack size 4.
These fishing hooks allow the worm to float properly in the water without the weight of the hook. Using a small Split Shot attached to the fishing line about 12 inches from the hook allows you to cast the plastic worm out like you would an other lure and reel back slowly. The trick to fishing with a plastic worm is to fish the worm slowly while jigging the fishing rod tip slowly as your reel the bait back into shore.
Another great tip is to use a product like LineDancer, this product attaches to your fishing pole above your real. All you need to do is put your fishing line into the holder and reel the bait like normal. This will create a constant jigging motion of the twitching of the line allowing your baits to dance in the water attracting the fish everytime.
If you find the bait dragging across the bottom of the lake change your retrieve speed to accommodate. You will feel a sudden twitch twitch on the line normally on the second tap it normally is a good thing to set the hook. Just remember most trout are small and do not require a big hook set.
You can catch plenty of trout from the plastic worms such as white lightning and silver orange worms. Break the 3' plastic worms in half and slide it on a 1/32 jig head allowing the tail to attract the fish.
Short Strike "tap tap = too long of a tail, just cut it down and you will get more fish on "The Strike" Every Time!
This video will show you how to cast and retrieve a trout worm. Such as a Lip RipperZ Trout Worm or T-Fisherman Worm. A slow retrieve is best depending on your depth of the lake or pond. A short bounce once in awhile will help make the bait more real like. Normally fished with 2lb fishing line. I like to use a long lightweight fishing rod.

This rainbow trout was caught using a Mini RipperZ - Orange Silver using a light fishing rod with 2lb fishing line. The trout was caught at Weatherby Lake in Kansas City, MO.

We have had a ton of experience fishing all of the above and have had the best luck when using a fish attractant called Crave Nitro Grease found mainly in California however you can find this from Cabala's and other online fishing tackle shops.
The fish attractant adds another form of sent to your baits making them really produce some great fish. There are many types of attractants other than the Nitro Grease however I have found this one to be the best yet other than another product made by Crave, it is the garlic sent from Crave called Trout Gravy it has a special formula that is Tournament Strength that works as a super fish attractant.
Crave makes some great products I love to use all the time do to the fact it just adds that extra help when working with stocked fish.
